STORYBOARD / STYLE FRAMES STAGE:
Create storyboard from the current script.
The storyboard will show key frame(s) from each scene matched with the relevant VO and show where supers will appear, as well as indicate where SFX might occur.
After storyboards are approved we will create style frames for each key scene.
Style frames will indicate general composition, colour, and animation/illustration style.
1 .5 WEEKs
One page from a sample storyboard. (See related animatic below)
PRE-PRO FOR STOP MOTION SHOOT:
Developing the style of the shoe
Fabrication/build of the shoe.
1 WEEK
Shots from previous builds at Stop Motion Dept.
ANIMATIC STAGE:
The animatic is where we put frames from the storyboard in a visual timeline synched with the VO.
Typically this is a black and white pencil drawn sequence where all elements, including the hero props, the shoes, are rendered as drawings some of which are animated to simulate what the final will look like in motion.
This will also act as a guide for the stop-motion animator.
As well, at this stage we create the composition and timings for all supers and the end tag.
It is important to get the animatic approved before proceeding withe the stop motion shoot
This helps everyone know what to expect in terms of length of scenes and pacing.
1 WEEK
Sample animatic from the storyboard page above.
STOP MOTION SHOOT:
This is where our hero shoes come to life.
The shoe, shot on green screen, will be lit appropriately for each scene to maximize later integration into the 2D backgrounds. The animatic is closely followed for animation timing and action.
1 WEEK
Shots from previous lighting set ups in the studio.
ANIMATION STAGE:
The approved animatic is used as a guide for building and animating the 2D backgrounds
We will follow the animatic closely to create background animations that match perfectly with the timings of the shoe.
This is also the stage where we animate the supers.
4 WEEKS (INCLUDING 2 APPROVAL STAGES)
Example of 2D Layering technique - 2D layers in 3D space.
POST-PRODUCTION STAGE:
This is the final stage of production whereby the shoe and the backgrounds are seamlessly composited together to create polished scenes.
This is also where we do any colour correction on the shoe, finesse the audio and music and add any legals if necessary.
